Dame Helen Mirren is to be presented with this year’s BAFTA Fellowship.

The actress joins the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor and Judi Dench in receiving the prestious honour in recognition of an outstanding contribution to film.

On receiving the Academy Fellowship, Dame Helen said: “This is the greatest professional honour I can imagine, certainly one I never dreamt of as a schoolgirl in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. To join that list of legendary names is overwhelming.”

John Willis, Chairman of BAFTA, added: “Dame Helen Mirren receives the Fellowship as one of the most outstanding actresses of her generation. Dame Helen’s incredibly successful career is testament to the determination, dedication and skill she brings to each of her roles.”

In an acting career spanning six decades, Mirren has won four BAFTAs and received a further seven nominations. Her most recent win came in 2006 when she won Best Actress for her role in The Queen.
