Cynthia Nixon has hit back at critics on Twitter.

The 52-year-old gubernatorial candidate announced her bid to become Governor of New York earlier this year but has repeatedly faced criticism.

Back in March, former New York City council speaker Christine Quinn told the New Yor Times that Nixon was an “unqualified lesbian” while her Democratic opponent Andrew Cuomo called her a “corporation”. According to Indy100, she’s also been called “unhinged”, but now Cynthia has hit back.

The former Sex and the City star tweeted on Friday (September 7): “During this campaign, I’ve been called: An unqualified lesbian, A corporation, Unhinged.

“I wasn’t born the son of a Governor. I was born the daughter of a single mum and grew up in a one-bedroom, fifth-floor walk-up partment. And my name is Cynthia.”

The tweet quickly went viral, amassing over 50,000 likes and retweets in 24 hours. Many of Nixon’s followers praised the actress for hitting back at haters.

If Nixon is successful in her bid to become governor, she will become New York’s first openly gay governor.
