Chelsea Clinton has said that LGBT rights are “the unfinished business of the 21st century”.

Speaking at Human Rights Campaign’s inaugural Time to Thrive conference – where Ellen Page came out last week – Clinton said that changing laws is “insufficient”.

She referenced her mother Hillary Clinton in her speech, saying: “My mother has often said that the issue of women is the unfinished business of the 21st century. That is certainly true. But so too are the issues of LGBT rights the unfinished business of the 21st century.”

“Changing laws and changing the political dialogue, while necessary, is insufficient to ensure that bullying stops, to ensure that every young person is supported by their parents and their teachers as they question who they are and they discover who they are, regardless of their sexuality,” Clinton added.

During her speech, the 33-year-old pushed for more action to combat homophobic bullying across the US.

Clinton also referenced Ellen Page, while speaking about the way that LGBT role models can influence change.
