Brighton’s George Montague married long-time partner ahead of today’s Pride

By Micah Sulit

George Montague is many things, including LGBT campaigner, Attitude Pride Award winner and Pride ambassador in Brighton, where he is “the oldest gay in the village”. Earlier this week he added “husband” to that impressive list.

Montague, 92, tied the knot with Somchai Phukkhlai, 46, at Brighton Town Hall on Friday. The two have been together for 19 years and in a civil partnership since 2006.

“Gay people have never had it so good,” Montague told BBC South East Today’s Ellie Chrisell.

Montague and his lovingly jazzed up mobility scooter have been a popular fixture at Brighton Pride for years now. The day before he said “I do”, he tweeted a photo of “Just Married” signs that were ready to be added to his scooter, then tweeted the final product earlier today.

Congratulations and our very best wishes, George and Somchai! See you at Brighton Pride!
