Apple’s Tim Cook, Vladimir Putin up for Time’s Person of the Year

Apple’s gay CEO Tim Cook and Russian President Vladimir Putin have both been included on the shortlist for TIME magazine’s Person of the Year award.

Cook’s nomination comes after he spoke publicly about his sexuality for the first time in October – read more here.

Meanwhile, Putin has hit the headlines on more than one occasion this year, with many campaigners criticising his country’s anti-gay laws. However, Putin recently denied that Russia is a homophobic country – read the full story here.

Six more finalists have been included on TIME’s shortlist, including Taylor Swift, the Ferguson protesters, the Ebola caregivers and National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell.

Acting president of Iraq’s Kurdish Region, Masoud Barzani, has also been nominated, alongside businessman Jack Ma.

TIME‘s Person of the Year will be announced today (December 10).
