Adele, Years & Years lead Brit Award 2016 nominations

By Troy Nankervis

Adele and Years & Years lead the nominations for the 2016 Brit Awards, which are to be held at the 02 Arena London next month.

The odds of Adele taking home a gong are high following her nominations for ‘Best Female Solo Artist’, ‘British Album of the Year’, for 25, and ‘Best Single’ and ‘Best Artist Video’ for her epic comeback single ‘Hello‘.

The Daily Mail notes that Adele could also be a frontrunner for the Global Success Award, following the phenomenal sales records of her hotly anticipated album release last year.

The 27-year-old last took out a Brit when ‘Skyfall’ was crowned Single of the Year back in 2013. The track, which accompanied the James Bond instalment of the same name and dominated the global music charts at the time of its release.

“You couldn’t get a bigger name in music right now. Adele is having an exceptional moment and The Brits are delighted to be a part of her history, her present and future,” said Brit chairman Max Lousada in a statement.

Also receiving four nominations is London electronica trio Years & Years, who will go head-to-head with Adele for Best Single and Best Video for their track Kings, while also being shortlisted for Best British Group, and Best British Breakthrough Act.

After learning of their nominations, Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander described the news as “really ridiculous” to the BBC.

“I don’t know what’s happening. It’s nuts,” he said.

Bassist Mikey Goldsworthy added it was “too much pressure”.

“That’s four times the anxiety. Sitting there and waiting for them to read the card.”

Following the death of David Bowie on January 10, Lousada also confirmed a tribute to honour the life of the music great would feature at the award ceremony.

“David Bowie was one of the most important and influential songwriters and performers ever and, like so many fans around the world, we’re devastated to hear of his loss,” he said.

“A visionary and ground-breaking pioneer, he has inspired generations of musicians and will continue to shape music for many years to come.

“Naturally, we wish to honour his extraordinary life and work at the forthcoming Brit Awards and pay a fitting tribute to one of our greatest icons. ”
