Prue Leith says she is worried about the safety of her son, Reform UK MP Danny Kruger, after the killing of Ann Widdecombe.

The Great British Bake Off judge spoke about her concerns during an interview with Times Radio, days after Widdecombe’s death.

Asked whether she feared for her son, Leith said she had chosen not to discuss the case with him.

“Well, I am to be honest. I haven’t even rung him up about it because I don’t want him having to add to the worry the fact that his mother is worrying.”

Who is Reform UK MP, Danny Kruger?

Kruger represents East Wiltshire. He was elected as a Conservative MP before joining Reform UK in September 2025.

Leith said she expected ministers to continue protecting MPs but acknowledged that recent events had changed how she viewed political life in Britain.

“Honestly, I think the government will do everything it can to protect MPs and there are dangers in every walk of life and this is one that MPs have to have in the back of their minds. But I think it is scary. It seems so amazing that this should be happening in the UK, which I’ve always thought of as the most civilised country about politics.”

She added: “It’s always been a proper country. You don’t reach for the gun when you don’t agree with somebody, you debate it and you vote on it.”

“I don’t always agree with Danny on politics but one of the great things is we don’t mind disagreeing” – Leith on Kruger’s views

Although Leith and her son often disagree politically, she said those conversations have remained respectful.

“We do talk a lot about politics and I don’t always agree with Danny on politics but one of the great things is we don’t mind disagreeing, it’s all perfectly civilised.”

Kruger is Leith’s only son with her late husband, author and property developer Rayne Kruger. The couple were married for 28 years before his death in 2002 and also adopted a daughter, Li-Da.
