A man has been arrested after a fire destroyed Pink Punters, the long-running LGBTQ+ nightclub in Fenny Stratford, Milton Keynes, in the early hours of Sunday (26 April).

Thames Valley Police said a 51-year-old man from Milton Keynes was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in custody while officers continue their investigation.

Emergency services were called to Watling Street at about 2am following reports of a fire at the venue. Customers and nearby residents were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.

“This was a significant fire in which a large number of people had to be evacuated” – chief superintendent Emma Baillie on the Pink Punters fire

Police said inquiries remain at an early stage and urged the public not to speculate about any motive.

Chief superintendent Emma Baillie said: “This was a significant fire in which a large number of people had to be evacuated.”

“Thankfully no one was injured and staff at the venue worked quickly and effectively to safely evacuate everyone.”

“At this time it would be too early to comment on any particular motivation for this incident and we would respectfully ask for people not to speculate.”

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were sent to the scene at 02:09 BST, with 12 appliances used at the height of the response. Firefighters remained at the site later on Sunday to deal with hotspots and make the area safe.

What is the Pink Punters in Milton Keynes?

Pink Punters is one of the best-known LGBTQ+ nightlife venues outside London and has operated for decades, drawing visitors from across the region.

Owner Frank McMahon said the building had been lost in the fire but confirmed all customers and staff got out safely.

“Whilst I am devastated to say that the building itself has been completely destroyed, I am deeply relieved, grateful and proud to confirm that no staff or customers were harmed, and everybody went home safely.”

Local Labour MP Callum Anderson said he was “deeply concerned” by the incident

He added that the venue intends to return.

“Pink Punters has always been about people, not just bricks and mortar. The building may be gone, but the family, the memories, the spirit and the love remain.

“And let me say this clearly: Pink Punters will be back.”

Local Labour MP Callum Anderson said he was “deeply concerned” by the incident and said those responsible should “feel the full force of the law”.

Road closures remained in place while forensic and fire investigators examined the scene.
