By Steve Brown

There might be a little way to go, but Christmas is well and truly in our sights.

And there’s nowhere better to get into the spirit than at a continental Christmas market.

Wondering which ones should be at the top of your list? Here are a few of our favourites…

Christmas Village on La Défense in Paris

When it comes to Christmas markets in Paris, you’re spoilt for choice.

From late November to early January, you’ll find chalet stalls, ice rinks, fir trees and light displays at markets all over the city.

One of the biggest and best markets is on La Défense. Browse the trinkets, leather goods and jewellery, then refuel with a glass of mulled wine and a plate of Alsatian fare.

Winter Wonders and Christmas Market in Brussels

Located in the marvellous setting of Brussels’ Grand Place, this winter wonderland has something for the whole family.

As well as over 200 chalets serving up delicious treats and arty gifts, there’s an ice rink, Ferris wheel and a merry-go-round.

With so much to see, do and eat, you can easily spend a few hours partaking in the festive fun.

Bruges Christmas Market

Bruges is often described as a magical place, and we’d have to agree. Fairy-tale buildings sit atop cobblestone streets, alongside winding canals, making for a wondrous setting – especially at Christmastime.

Head to Bruges Christmas market, which is overlooked by the iconic Belfry, and enjoy ice skating, mulled wine, tasty food and, of course, shopping.

Ice * Village in Amsterdam

As you might be able to tell from its name, Ice * Village is centred around a rather impressive ice rank.

Located on Amsterdam’s Museumplein, it’s the perfect place to show off your best moves on ice.

Don’t fancy a night on the rink? Browse the many, many chalets that surround it. You’ll find all the usual market favourites: gifts, food, wine and beer.

Christmas Market in Lille

If you’re looking for a market that’s a little closer to home, Lille’s the place for you. It’s just over the Channel so you can go there and back in a day.

You’ll find the Christmas market on Place Rihou. There are dazzling decorations, cute gifts to bring back home and a delightful nativity scene.

And with local dishes on offer, you can grab a bite to enjoy while you browse.
