YouTube’s Connor Franta: ‘I watched every coming out video ten times over’

By Will Stroude

YouTube star Connor Franta made headlines around the world after coming out in an emotional video on his channel last year, and now one of the world’s most followed vloggers has opened up about the experience exclusively to Attitude.

Speaking in the new issue of aTEEN, the 22-year-old Californian described his decision to come out publicly to his 4 million subscribers was daunting, but that he was inspired by other coming out videos and wanted to provide other with the same.

“It was very daunting to think about initially, but after coming to terms with it myself, I didn’t see any down side of sharing it with the world. I watched every coming out video ten times over and they helped me greatly, so in a way, I wanted to give back and comfort others who are coming to terms with their sexual identity.

He continued: “It’s never easy to realise you are different, especially as a teenager. It’s a vulnerable time when most of us are horribly self-conscious. It took me a while to come to terms with my sexuality, realise it was far from the end of the world, and that for the people who truly cared about me, it wouldn’t change a thing.T

The young star – who published his first autobiographical book A Work In Progress earlier this year – added that other young people struggling in closet should take coming out at the their own pace.

“Go at your own speed and know that everything will be okay. It just takes a little time.”
