Fans have been eagerly awaiting details of the third season of The Umbrella Academy since it was renewed in November 2020 and the time has finally arrived.

The new trailer provides a few hints for the plot of the Netflix show’s third season after the Umbrellas dodged death and prevented a doomsday in 1963 during season two.

The Hargreeves siblings are up against a new rivalry in season three when they enter an alternate reality and The Sparrows, a new team consisting of seven other super-powered individuals, have taken over – it’s gearing up to be a tale of intense sibling rivalry.

One of season three’s plot points, however, has already been announced with Elliot Page revealing his character go by Viktor and come out as transgender, in parallel to the actor’s real-life transition.

The Umbrella Academy looks as though it is set to follow Viktor as he embraces his identity over this season as well as navigating control over his developing superpowers.

Based on Gerard Way’s comic of the same name, The Umbrella Academy’s past seasons have been praised for their queer inclusivity: in the show’s first season Klaus (Robert Sheehan) had a love affair with a male soldier and in season two saw Viktor’s love story with Sissy (Marin Ireland) take off.

In addition to Page and Sheehan, season three sees show regulars Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, and Aidan Gallagher round out the cast.

The upcoming season also includes the introduction of some new faces that make up the Sparrow Academy: Justin Cornwell, Britne Oldford, Jake Epstein, Genesis Rodriguez and Cazzie David.

Netflix’s announcement proposes the core questions that these dysfunctional siblings will endeavour to answer in the show’s third instalment: “Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives in the upcoming season? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”

All 10 episodes of season 3 of The Umbrella Academy premieres June 22, on Netflix.
