The Crown to end with season five, Imelda Staunton confirmed as Queen
The acclaimed Netflix series will conclude a season earlier than planned.

The Crown is set to end after season five, with Imelda Staunton taking on the role of The Queen.
The news was announced on Friday (31 January) by creator Peter Morgan, who revealed the acclaimed Netflix series charting Queen Elizabeth II’s reign will end a season earlier than planned, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” said Morgan.
“I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”
Teasing a possibile conclusion for the series set after the year 2000 (our money is on 2002, the year of the Golden Jubilee as well as the deaths of Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother), Morgan added that he was”absolutely thrilled” that Staunton would be “taking The Crown into the 21st Century.”
Staunton, who received and Oscar nomination for 2004’s Vera Drake and is also known for playing Dolores Umbridge in 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, said in a statement: “I have loved watching The Crown from the very start.”
“As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts.
“I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”
The Crown seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
