A star-studded revival of Jesus Christ Superstar has been cancelled just days before it was due to begin.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much-loved rock musical tells the story of the son of God to songs including I Don’t Know How to Love Him and Superstar, and first debuted on Broadway in 1971.

A new 51-date US touring production was scheduled to begin on June 9, and would have starred Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams, former N-singer JC Chasez, Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd and Sex Pistols’ legend John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten.

However, an update on the tour’s official website this Friday (May 30) announced that the tour has now been scrapped – with no explanation. It reads:

“Options Clause Entertainment LLC, an affiliate of S2BN Entertainment, announced today the cancellation of the Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular Tour. The tour was scheduled to kick off in New Orleans on June 9. All purchased tickets will be refunded.”

At the time of writing, there is still no official word as to why the tour was cancelled so close to its start date.
