Sarah Paulson was worried about her career after kissing Cherry Jones at the Tony’s

By Fabio Crispim

Coming out was the last thing on Sarah Paulson’s mind when she kissed her then-girlfriend, Cherry Jones, at the Tony Awards.

Jones was announced the winner of a Tony Award for best actress in 2005 and the pair celebrated with a long kiss.

Paulson, known for her work on American Horror Story and American Crime Story revealed that she suffered from anxiety after “accidentally” outing herself at the Tony Awards.

Speaking to NOTOFU magazine, Paulson said, “She won a Tony Award, I kissed her, and all of a sudden I was outed.”

“I didn’t really think about it in that way at the time,” she adds, “What am I gonna do, pat her on the back and say, ‘good job, dude?’ It didn’t occur to me to do anything but what I did.”

Paulson had just signed up to play conservative Christian woman, Harriet Hayes, in Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 66 on the Sunset Strip and was worried she was going to get fired for the kiss.

“I had anxiety. I was worried that there was going to be some fallout if Aaron or anyone on the show knew that I was with Cherry.”

She states the anxiety only left her when Aaron Sorkin approached her and congratulated Paulson on her relationship with Jones. “It was the biggest exhale of my life. I didn’t realise how anxious about it I had been until he said that,” Paulson says.

“You should be able to love whomever you f*cking well please,” she concludes.
