Ryan Reynolds: ‘I support gay marriage because I’m not a monster!’

By Will Stroude

Ryan Reynolds has joked that he supports same-sex marriage because he’s “not a monster”.

Speaking to HuffPost Live, the Canadian Green Lantern star was asked about his thoughts on same-sex marriage, which has been legal in his home country since 2005.

After host Alyona Minkovski asked:”What are your thoughts on gay marriage? Obviously you’re not opposed to it”, Reynolds replied: “God no. I’m not a monster! I think it’s fantastic. It’s been legal in Canada for ten years now. To me [to oppose it] just seems crazy.

Asked why Canada was so much further ahead than the United States – where equal marriage was finally legalised across all 5o states last month – the 38-year-old said: “I don’t know about that. I just find it amusing how polarising it can be here.
It’s like, people scream… [Texas Senator] Ted Cruz is saying it’s judicial tyranny. To me it seems very humane. Like a given. We shouldn’t be in a state of awe and celebration for it, we should be taking it for granted, like regular marriage.”

He added: “It’s seems like we’re way late on that in the United States. I’m very glad it’s passed through.”
