‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ star Dusty Ray Bottoms was ‘exorcised’ after coming out to parents

RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Dusty Ray Bottoms has opened up about her parents’ reaction to her coming out.

Dusty, real name Dustin Rayburn, opened about her parents’ reaction to her coming out in this week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, E!Online reports. 

In the latest episode, contestant Blair St Clair discussed her Christian background and revealed that her mother is her biggest supporter, leading Dusty to open up about her experience with her family. 

Speaking to Blair St Clair, the star said: “I find that so interesting because your parents are so supportive of you and your drag. My parents have never seen me in a show, I don’t think they’ll ever come. Me and my family don’t really talk anymore.”

The queen explained: “When I came out to my family, the night before it happened, I literally was at breaking point… my lowest low… I cried out to God and was like, ‘I need a change in my life’. Then the next morning, the me coming out happened.” 

Dusty revealed how her father had found something on her computer, which led her to come out.

She recalled: “They lost it. They took me to church. They got me exorcised because they thought I was possessed by a gay demon. I had this prayer warrior standing in front of me, my mum and dad were standing behind her looking at me, and I had to list every person I’d had a sexual encounter with.”

Speaking to the cameras, Dusty continued: “I was so confused after the whole thing went down because ‘Was I straight now?’ I had to go through therapy and I was on track to go to ‘straight camp’. I was meeting with these pastors, and he was like, ‘In a homosexual relationship you’ll never find success. You’ll never find love.'”

She added: “I stopped him, I went upstairs and I packed my car and said: ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ It was the most humiliating, awful thing of my life. Ever.” 

Life has since turned around for Dusty, who is now engaged to partner Marc Singer and has a “beautiful life”. 

“Things are going really great in my life,” she explained. “I didn’t have to compromise or change for someone’s small-minded view. But it was a journey.”
