By Josh Haggis

NURSE JACKIE (Season 4)Nurse Jackie

has been renewed for a seventh season by US TV network Showtime – before season six has even begun.

Edie Falco will return in the title role for season seven, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, as will show runner Clyde Phillips.

Hower, Falco’s co-star Peter Facinelli will be leaving his regular role as Dr. Fitch Cooper during the upcoming sixth season, which begins later this month (April) in the US.  He may return for cameo appearances, however.

Discussing Facinelli’s exit, the show’s executive producer Richie Jackson said: “In the twilight of season six, Peter asked to be released from his contract to pursue new creative challenges. Nothing will eclipse the incredible contribution he made to the success of Nurse Jackie since the dawn of the show.”

Nurse Jackie debuted on Showtime in 2009, and Edie Falco went on to win a Golden Globe for her role as Nurse Jackie in 2010. In the UK, the show airs on Sky Atlantic.
