Miriam Margolyes has revealed she has earned more than £570,000 through celebrity video platform Cameo, saying the app has allowed her to “spend rather more freely” later in life.

The actor, who shared the figure on The Romesh Ranganathan Show podcast, said the total reflects her earnings since joining Cameo in 2020.

“As of now, I’ve made I think £570,000 at the last count,” Margolyes said. “That’s the whole shebang, since I joined Cameo.”

What is Cameo?

Cameo allows fans to pay public figures for personalised video messages. Margolyes previously charged around £100 per video before her profile was marked unavailable this week, with users now prompted to join a waiting list for future bookings. At the time of writing, her account shows more than 2,100 reviews and an average rating of 4.94 stars.

Margolyes told Ranganathan she limits the amount of time she spends recording videos for fans.

“I try not to spend more than a couple hours on it a day, because life’s for living,” she said.

The Harry Potter star, who played Professor Sprout in the franchise, said the requests she receives have changed over time. Rather than asking for birthday greetings, many users now request advice and motivational messages.

How much did Miriam Margolyes earn for her work on the Harry Potter films?

“One of the things I noticed is that the cameos now are asking for advice and what they call pep-talks, rather than happy birthday or something like that,” she explained.

“It’s difficult because they don’t give you enough information to know that you’re telling them useful stuff.”

Margolyes added that the platform has become financially significant for her.

“But I’m very grateful to Cameo, I have to be honest, because it means that I can spend rather more freely than I would have done otherwise.”

The figure is notable given Margolyes previously revealed she earned £60,000 for her work across the Harry Potter film series.
