Baby, he’s a hit! The latest trailer for the film adaptation of the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has been released and it looks like it’s going to be a ball!

The trailer sees Jamie New, played by Max Harwood, 23, journey to become a drag queen with the help of his friends and family.

The film is being released on 17 September on Amazon Prime Video, after initially being slated for a full cinematic release by the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.

As well as Harwood, the film stars Sarah Lancashire, Lauren Patel, Shobna Gulati, Ralph Ineson, Adeel Akhtar, Samuel Bottomley, Sharon Horgan, and Richard E. Grant.

“Be who you want to be”

Throughout the trailer we see two sides of Jamie’s life – his life as a high-school student in Sheffield and his aspiration of being a drag queen, at one point telling someone: “It’s all I ever dream of. And when I close my eyes, it’s all I can see”.

Set mostly to the music from the West End hit musical, the trailer sees Jamie show best friend Priti his first pair of red high heels, meeting his new drag queen mentor Loco Chanelle (Richard E. Grant) and discussing what it means to be “normal” with his mum (Sarah Lancashire).

Loco tells Jamie at one point “Be who you want to be”, which is the best advice to anyone struggling with their identity.

In March, Harwood spoke to Attitude about the role, which is not to dissimilar to his own story. He said: “When I was growing up, I didn’t like playing football. I didn’t like getting muddy. I liked to dress up, and act and dance and sing, and, typically, when I was growing up, those were things that girls did.

“I definitely, sometimes felt othered, in that sense — that I was doing things that weren’t what other little boys were doing, I suppose.”

The newcomer to the silver screen also said he was in a very similar place to his character about knowing who he is 100% saying, “I was navigating, not to prove to myself, but to convince my parents, and my friends that I actually could do this.”

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will be available on Amazon Prime Video on 17 September. Check out the new trailer below:
