JK Rowling faces Twitter backlash over Harry Potter character’s sexuality

By Will Stroude

JK Rowling has found herself the target of online fury after she suggested that beloved Harry Potter character Sirius Black wasn’t gay.

It all started when a fan asked a series of questions, including whether or not Sirius was gay. Rowling then seemed to answer those questions by listing answers in her bio – which appeared to confirm that Sirius was straight.

Soon after, #JKRowlingIsOverParty began to trend as people seemed to be angry that Sirius was straight.

Rowling hit back, saying that she hadn’t revealed any “news” and that people were “leaping to mistaken conclusions”.

She later changed her bio to: “Never, ever be flippant in your Twitter bio. No good can come of it.”

Back in 2007, Rowling revealed that beloved Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore was gay. The author has long been a staunch supporter of LGBT rights, and recently spoke out against the homophobic abuse levelled at Team GB’s Tom Daley following his disappointment in Rio.
