Indonesia bans ‘effeminate’ men from TV

By Will Stroude

Indonesia’s television regulator has banned portrayals of ‘effeminate’ men on TV.

The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) issued the restrictive new directive banning gender non-conforming behaviour last Tuesday (Feb 23), following complaints from concerned viewers, reports Gay Star News.

The directive prohibits depictions of men wearing feminine fashion and make-up, feminine tone of voice and body language (including, but not limited to, walking style, sitting style and hand gestures).

Other banned material includes ‘depicting justifications or promoting that men can behave effeminately’, ‘depicting a man greeting another man in ways that are supposed to be for women’, and ‘depicting terminologies and colloquial terms that are often used by effeminate males.’

A statement on the regulator’s website reads: “KPI assess these things are not in accordance with the respect for the norms of decency and morality in society and the protection of children and adolescents.”

“Airing this content thus can encourage children to learn and/or justify inappropriate behaviour such as common in everyday life.”

The announcement follows a similar directive earlier this month (Feb 18), banning the ‘promotion’ LGBT themes.
