star Lena Dunham will be honoured for her support of the LGBT community.

The writer and actress has been named the 2014 recipient of the advocacy group Point Foundation’s Horizon Award.

Dunham has been described as “a young trailblazer who has taken a leadership role as an advocate for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) issues”.

Point Foundation CEO, Jorge Valencia, commented: “There is no one better at conveying the ambition of today’s young adults to overcome obstacles and realise their great potential than Lena Dunham.

“Dunham uses intelligent humour and compassion to present an honest appraisal of something our Point Scholars know all too well: the struggle to be comfortable in your own skin.”

She will receive the honour during a gala at the New York Public Library in April.

The third season of Girls is currently airing on Sky Atlantic in the UK and HBO in the US.
