Rising star Andy Mientus is to play a gay baddie on The Flash.

The US sci-fi drama, a spin-off of Arrow, centres on a socially awkward police forensic investigator called Barry Allen, played by former Glee actor Grant Gustin. After being struck by lightning in a freak accident, Allen awakes from a coma with super-speed, becoming “The Flash”.

Mientus – best known for his role as Kyle on short-lived music TV series Smash – has been cast as The Pied Piper, an openly gay villain whose sexuality will be incorporated into his storyline, reports TVLine.

The Pied Piper will make his debut in episode 12 of The Flash, which began earlier this month (October) on US network The CW. He will be the second gay character on the show following Crime Lab Director David Singh, played by Patrick Sabongui.

Mientus, who is also gay in real life, recently announced his engagement to his long-term boyfriend find out more here .

The Flash will air on Sky1 in the UK, though the exact premiere date has yet to be announced.
