Gay rapper Keving Fret has been shot dead in Puerto Rico aged 24.

The Latin trap artist, who was described at the genre’s first openly gay artist, was shot eight times while riding a motorbike in the capital city of San Juan on Thursday afternoon (10 January).

Fret was taken to hospital after being shot in the hip and head and was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Confirming the news, his manager Eduardo Rodriguez said: “There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go.

“We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.”

An outspoken LGBT+ advocate who courted controversy after saying that his sexuality was a “choice”, Fret rose to prominence in 2018 with the release of his debut single ‘Soy Asi’ (‘I’m Like This).

He told Paper magazine last year: “I’m a person that doesn’t care what anybody has to say.

“[Now I see] young gay guys or young lesbians that are looking at me now like a role model, like wow, if he did it, and he don’t care what anybody else has to say, I can do it.”

The BBC reports that police are currently searching for another man on a motorcycle who was with Fret when he was found but fled the scene.
