Disney ‘open’ to an LGBT princess, Moana directors claim
Are we going to see an LGBT princess on the big screen?
The directors of Moana have claimed that Disney are “open” to a gay princess.
Ron Clements and John Musker directed the 2016 hit film and introduced Disney’s first Polynesian princess Moana. The pair were also behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules and The Princess and the Frog, whiched introduced Disney’s first African-American princess.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, the pair were asked about Disney’s plans to feature its first ever LGBT princess, and it turns out it could happen sooner than people think.
Clements said: “It seems like the possibilities are pretty open at this point.”
Musker explained that he and Clements don’t have control over what Disney does, but insisted an LGBT princess could happen in the future.
He said: “It would be driven by a director or a directorial team that really wanted to push that and if [Disney Animation’s Chief Creative Officer] John Lasseter liked the idea, but I would say we haven’t ever really [had] restrictions placed on what we’ve done.”
Earlier this year, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast featured an “exclusive gay moment” and despite the controversy surrounding the film, it broke box office records.
Disney Channel show Andi Mack also made headlines this year after it featured a storyline in which teenager Cyrus developed feelings for his friend Josh and came out to his best friend.
However, the plot led to an intense backlash and saw One Million Moms launch a Disney boycott which forced Disney to pull the show from airing in around 50 countries.
