Callum Scott Howells is joining the cast of Cabaret as the Emcee in October

It’s A Sin breakout star Callum Scott Howells will be treading the boards soon on London’s West End taking over the role of The Emcee in the musical Cabaret.

Callum won acclaim and praise for his portrayal of Colin in Russell T. Davies’ Channel 4 Aids drama, with the moment his character was diagnosed with HIV being nominated for Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment award at the BAFTAs earlier this year. Callum was also nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category.

On his new role, Callum says, “I can’t wait to work with the incredible team and company, and follow on from two actors who I hugely respect and admire. I feel very lucky and excited to be taking on such an iconic role within this widely celebrated and unique production. It’s going to be a ride.”

Posting on Instagram on Wednesday (10 August) to make the announcement Callum got into character quoting the lyric “in here life is beautiful” from the musical’s opening song.

The role of Emcee was originated in this production by The Theory of Everything actor, Eddie Redmayne, who was replaced by Hawkeye star, Fra Fee.

Callum will be joined by Emmy Award nominee and The Handmaid’s Tale alum Madeline Brewer, who will play Sally Bowles. She says she’s “beyond honored to be invited to the party.”

Both will be in Cabaret from 3 October 2022 until 28 January 2023. At certain performances, the role of Sally Bowles will be played by Emily Benjamin.

Callum Scott Howells will, later this year, be seen in the Netflix film The Beautiful Game opposite Bill Nighy. 

Also joining the cast in October are Sid Sagar as Cliff Bradshaw, Danny Mahoney as Ernst Ludwig, and Michelle Bishop as Fraulein Kost. Vivien Parry and Richard Katz continue to play Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz respectively.

A truly unique production, Cabaret opened to rave reviews n December last year and was widely praised as the ultimate theatrical experience. In April, the production won a record-breaking seven Olivier Awards, the most for any musical revival in Olivier history, as well as three prestigious Critics Circle Awards.

Cabaret at the KIT KAT CLUB is produced by Ambassador Theatre Group Productions and Underbelly.
