Britney Spears to perform at the VMAs for the first time in almost a decade

By Will Stroude

Well, it’s official. Britney’s back – b*tch.

In news sure to delight pop fans everywhere, the Princess of Pop has confirmed she will perform at the MTV Video Music Awards for the first time in almost a decade when the star-studded (and traditionally controversy-filled) ceremony takes place this month.

The news was revealed on Twitter yesterday (August 16) in an announcement video which harked back to some of the best of Britney’s VMA history.

As a very familiar-looking python slithers backstage, the Piece of Me singer – who’s set to release ninth studio album Glory later this month – says in voiceover: “The VMAs don’t just give you a stage. They give you a story – some way of taking a fraction of a second and making it live forever. Before you know it, it’s history. Before you know it, it’s Britney, b*tch!”

From her Burmese python-clad performance of ‘I’m a Slave 4 U’ in 2001 to a lip-locking routine with Madonna and Christina Aguilera two years later, Britney’s VMA performances have consistently provided viewers with some of pop culture’s most iconic moments.

Fans will be hoping for more history as the 34-year-old takes to the stage for the first televised performance of brand brand single ‘Make Me’ alongside US rapper G-Eazy at the ceremony in Mew York City’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday, August 28.

It will be the first time Britney has performed at the VMAs since her ill-fated 2007 appearance, when, at the height of her personal troubles and mere months after shaving her head, she took to the stage for a half-hearted and critically-panned rendition of ‘Gimme More’, which only increased the public concern surrounding the singer.

Nine years later, however, and a resurgent Britney will be hoping to put that controversy to bed for good as she returns to the stage which helped make her then break her. We can’t wait to see what she has in store.

The MTV VMAs air live from Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday, August 28.
