Alex Landi understands the importance of playing a gay Asian character on primetime TV.
Grey’s Anatomy – which has been running for 15 seasons – has seen a number of LGBT characters throughout its run but for the first time ever in the shows history there will be a gay male character introduced.
Landi joined the ABC drama in a recurring role as Dr Nico Kim in season 15 – which kicked off with a two-hour premiere on September 27.
Now, in an interview with Travis Mills on Beats 1 at Apple Music, the actor – who identifies as straight – said he hopes he is making “everyone proud”.

He said: “I’m just glad that I can give everyone a voice. Asians are represented, I think, by less than three per cent in entertainment, LGBTQ being less than one per cent, so for them to combine both of those categories into one role is super special, and I’m so happy that I can take that on.
“I just hope I do it right. I just hope the way I do it is accepted by everyone. I want to take these two categories and make everyone look strong.
“I want to get rid of that stereotype and give them a different look on the LGBTQ community. I just hope I’m making everyone proud.”
