9 amazing TV shows to binge-watch during #Queerantine

Needs some TV inspo already? We got you.

By Jamie Wareham

The world might be on lockdown, but our incredible LGBTQ community remains stronger than ever.

But as you stay at home to ride out the ongoing coronavirus crisis, it can be easy to feel cut off from the people and places that define our queer lives.

As part of our #Queerantine series, a new initiative to bring LGBTQ folk from across the world together using the power of social media, we have some distraction inspiration.

We’ve never been ones to let a little thing like distance get in the way of the queer agenda, and one way to fuel that is with stories that empower us. And those, that give us the queer giggles.

So if you’re endlessly scrolling through those video on demand screens already. Let us direct you to some of our must watches during #Queerantine.

Elite

Enrol in a third season of the super-sexy Spanish drama starring TV’s most twisted teenagers.

Serving fresh escándalo (!), the latest run features another murder, a throuple *gasp* and even more screen time for queen Carla/the Marchioness, the bitch with a slither of a heart we all wanted to be at school.

S1-3 available now on Netflix

The Mandalorian

The urge to escape to a galaxy far, far away has never been more pressing as we find our minds drifting to the dark side. But there is light as Disney+ launches in the UK with this Star Wars spin-off about the title bounty hunter (played by Pedro Pascal) – the sight of baby Yoda is also guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Feel Good

If you’re a singleton struggling to find The One during love lockdown – self-isolation really isn’t conductive to dating – get your fix of feels with Mae Martin’s semi-autobiographical romantic comedy about a recovering addict and stand-up who falls head over heels for her formerly heterosexual new girlfriend George.

S1 available now on All4

Noughts and Crosses

Malory Blackman’s seminal series of young adult novels have been winningly brought to the small screen.

Turning the tables, the race reversal drama – in which white people are subject to discrimination from their black counterparts – charts the doomed romance between Sephy (a cross) and Callum (a nought). The course of love never did run smooth.

S1 available now on BBC iPlayer

Dare Me

Put down the pom-poms, this is no Bring it On. Based on Megan Abbott’s best-selling novel of the same name, this mystery drama tumbles into the world of cheerleading in a fiendishly watchable tale of friendship, obsession and toxic teen angst.

What the show lacks in cheer, it more than makes up for in bite.

S1 available now on Netflix

Making The Cut

Anyone else found themselves repeatedly muttering “make it work” lately? Just us, then… Project Runway dream team Tim Gunn and supermodel Heidi Klum reunite in search of the next big name in high-fashun. Seamless entertainment.

Absolutely Fabulous

Revisit all six series of the classic comedy created by and starring Jennifer Saunders, and Joanna Lumley as gay icons Eddy and Patsy.

A reminder of a simpler time, when life’s problems could be washed down with a bottle (or seven) of Bolly. What are you waiting for sweetie, darling, sink into the sofa and crack open that Prosecco!

S1-6 available now on BBC iPlayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Conquering monsters, gods and bad 90s fashion, Buffy Summers saved the world a lot – in stylish, yet affordable boots no less.

On the brink of our own corona-shaped hellmouth, TV’s most iconic heroine is just the tonic humanity needs as we dive into the enduring supernatural drama.

S1-7 available now on Amazon Prime

Breeders

Spare a thought for your heterosexual friends currently climbing the walls in self-isolation with their sprogs.

This spot-on comedy with The Office’s Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard delves into the ups and downs of being a parent, as they reminisce about their days of being responsibility-free.

Best watched while cosying up with your impeccably well-behaved French bulldog.
