The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has announced that Canada will officially take part in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest after CBC/Radio-Canada was granted full membership last week.
Eurovision 2027 will take place in Bulgaria in May 2027 following their 2026 entry DARA taking home the winning title with her song ‘Bangaranga’, scoring 516 points in the grand final in Vienna.
The Canadian broadcaster’s new status was approved by delegates at the EBU’s General Assembly in Prague earlier this month, ending its 76 years as an associate member.
Canadian singer Céline Dion represented Switzerland in 1988
Canada previously earned recognition at Eurovision when Canadian singer Céline Dion represented Switzerland at the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest.
She won the contest by a single point with her French-language performance of the song ‘Ne partez pas sans moi’.
Marie-Philippe Bouchard, president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, expressed excitement in a statement as per the EBU website.
“We’re bringing the world’s largest live music event to Canadians” – Marie-Philippe Bouchard celebrating Canada’s participation in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest
“On this Canada Day, as we celebrate with Canadians across the country and around the world the richness and diversity of Canadian culture, we’re so excited to confirm that we’re bringing the world’s largest live music event to Canadians,” said Bouchard.
“Our participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, starting next year in Bulgaria, will allow Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the most storied music stages in the world. It will also allow fans in Canada to continue watching and voting in the Song Contest, as they have done for years — with the added thrill of seeing their own country represented on the Eurovision stage.”
Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, Martin Green, honoured Dion’s participation
Martin Green CBE, director of the Eurovision Song Contest at the EBU, said the organisation was “delighted” to welcome Canada to the Eurovision “family”, honouring Dion as a “memorable connection”.
“We look forward to seeing Canada bring its own voice, creativity, and energy to the Eurovision Song Contest stage in Bulgaria in 2027,” said Green.
The announcement comes after a turbulent year for Eurovision.
Countries withdraw from Eurovision 2026
Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Iceland and the Netherlands all declined to participate in the 2026 contest over Israel’s inclusion, while several sponsors also withdrew their support. The European Broadcasting Union also faced criticism from some member broadcasters over the contest’s televoting system, where viewers submit votes via phone calls, SMS messages and other mobile methods.
The EBU now represents 115 media organisations across 57 countries.
