Ben Aldridge and Jim Parsons are going on an emotional journey in the first trailer for their upcoming love story, Spoiler Alert

The trailer sees the Fleabag and The Big Bang Theory stars, who both identify as gay, as Michael and Kit as they go through all the typical milestones of any couple such as first dates, seeing each other’s apartments, and meeting the parents.

On one of the pair’s first dates, they go over their childhoods with Michael bringing up his love of Christmas, while Kit reveals he’s a fan of magic.

The motif of taking pictures comes in early as the two attend a party before going back to Michael’s place, where it is revealed he is also a fan of The Smurfs in a major way!

“Oh my god, they’re in here too,” exclaims a shocked Kit.

“I think you’re very cool and I’m worried you’re going to break my heart,” says Michael to Kit before we see Kit declare the two are boyfriends in front of his parents, played by Sally Field and Bill Irwin.

Sady things take a turn for the serious as Kit is given a serious diagnosis and the pictures the town take of one another becomes much more important.

“I was always afraid Kit would break my heart and eventually he did. He broke it open,” says Michael in voiceover.

As the music swells we see a montage of clips as the two struggle with life. At one point Sally Field advises, ‘you have to run the race in front of you because that’s all there is,” while Michael notes that this “is less of a rom-com and more of a love story.”

In a particularly emotional moment, Michael demands hospital staff give his husband a bed after they were promised one. Kit then jokes, “That was Oscar-worthy”.

The film is based on Michael Ausiello’s best-selling memoir Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies and is described by Focus Features as “a heartwarming, funny and life-affirming story of how Michael and Kit’s relationship is transformed and deepened when one of them falls ill.”

Ausiello was a writer at Entertainment Weekly before launching the website TV Line. His husband, Kit Rowan, passed away from a rare form of neuroendocrine cancer, that Ausiello described as “merciless”, on 5 February 2015.

Spoiler Alert is set to be released on 2 December.
