Troye Sivan dedicates ARIA Awards ‘Song of the Year’ win to LGBT youth

Troye Sivan used his acceptance speech at last night’s Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards in Sydney today to help inspire LGBT kids across the country.
“This is for every gay Australian kid who wants to make music, you can do it and win an ARIA too,” the 21-year-old singer said as he accepted the Apple Music Song of the Year Award for his song ‘Youth’, which was was presented to him by Attitude cover star Robbie Williams.
Speaking to journalists backstage, the singer and YouTube star promised he would continue to use his platform to promote LGBT equality and acceptance.
“It freaks me out sometimes, it’s a lot of pressure. [But] It would be irresponsible of me to not do my best to embrace it as much as I can,” he said.
“I’ve been so blessed to have such an amazing platform to talk to so many people and I’m going use it every single second to talk about the things that I think are really important, and fight for the causes that I think are important.”
The ‘Wild’ singer also pledged to continue fighting for marriage equality in Australian, and urged fans to not “get complacent” in the battle for equality.
“To me, it feels like it’s no longer an issue of the people and more just an issue for politicians,” he said. “It’s only a matter of time, but we can’t get complacent. We have to keep going and keep pushing forward.”
Sivan, who was been nominated for the prestiguous Young Australian of the Year Award, went on to describe Australia as “a progressive, open, inclusive , safe country,” but lamented that the majority of Australian’s beliefs on same-sex marriage were not yet “represented politically.”
