Nicola Adams collects Active Award from Hayden-Smith

By Nick Levine

Olympic and Commonwealth champion boxer Nicola Adams won the Active prize at the Attitude Awards on Monday night (October 13).

Nicola, who in 2012 became the first woman ever to win an Olympic boxing title, and who identifies as bisexual, was presented with the award by actor and Attitude contributor Andrew Hayden-Smith. Talking about homophobia in sport, Andrew told the audience at the event in central London: “This woman, just by being herself, is putting up a fight against prejudice.”

The Leeds-born athlete then explained that the award “meant a lot” to her, before adding: “It’s really good to be a figure that can represent the LGBT community in sport. It’s an honour to be up here tonight receiving this award.”

The Olympic medal-winning athlete has also posed for the latest Attitude – the Awards Issue – and appears on one of nine special collectible covers. Take a look below.
