In the two weeks plus since the release of Heartstopper, the show has received an overwhelming amount of love and support. And rightly so!

Not just from the existing fans of the Alice Oseman universe, but new fans who have been introduced to the world of Charlie Spring, Nick Nelson, and co through the smash-hit Netflix adaptation.

However, it hasn’t stopped some people from speculating about the sexuality of one of the series’ leads, Kit Connor.

“Some people on here know my sexuality better than I do”

Responding to such speculation, the actor, 18, tweeted on Monday (2 May): “twitter is so funny man. apparently some people on here know my sexuality better than I do…”

The actor has also faced accusations of ‘queer-baiting’ because he hasn’t publicly stated his sexuality.

Amid the responses, which again, were overwhelmingly positive and supportive of Kit, a few fans found the perfect way to shut down the unnecessary speculation.

Several posted a screenshot of a panel from Oseman’s original Heartstopper comic where rugby coach Ms. Singh chastises three of Nick’s friends for speculating about his sexuality.

“You can’t tell whether people are gay by what they look like. And gay and straight aren’t the only two options. Anyway, it’s very rude to speculate about people’s sexuality,” Miss Singh tells the boys.

She then adds, “Go home lads.”

As many fans have pointed out, some people seem to have rather missed the point of the series in the first place.

Let us be very clear on the matter: Someone’s sexuality or identity is none of your concern. It is theirs. You do not have the right to tell people who they are. That is for them to figure out and they can tell you IF they want to.

In the words of Ms Singh, “go home lads”.

Heartstopper is streaming on Netflix now.

The Attitude May/June issue is out now.
