Visit Gods Own Junkyard pop-up in Soho in memory of Chris Bracey

By Joseph Kocharian

This month we were sad to hear the tragic news that the exceptionally talented Chris Bracey, creator and owner of London gallery Gods Own Junkyard, had passed away. We were lucky enough to do a shoot in the wonderful workshop of neon lights in East London, and will miss his supreme talent and creative vision.

Prior to Chris passing, he had plans with his friend Nick Poulton to host a pop-up Gods Own Junkyard on Brewer Street in Soho. Chris’ wife, Linda, and his sons Marcus and Matthew (who are all involved with the management and the making of signs), have rightly decided  that it would be fitting tribute to Chris to carry on the exhibition in a ‘show must go on’ attitude that their father would have approved of.

This wonderland of fantastic lights will be going back to Soho, where Chris’ career started back in the 70s, working for his father’s neon sign making company. Looking at entertainment and the iconic Soho strip club industry, he thought to himself, “Sex, I’ll make money from sex – not through selling it myself but through neon signs for night clubs and strip joints.” Before Chris passed away, he re-made the iconic Raymond Revue Bar sign that his father Dick Bracey had made in 1958.

As well as Soho, there’s also the Christmas Fayre at Gods Own Junkyard in Walthamstow which is going ahead, with Chris’s wishes, throughout December. We highly recommend you go to the Soho pop-up, or even better, go out to Walthamstow to visit the sublime space. The entire Attitude team were blown away by how fantasti a space Chris had created – filled to the brim of amazing pieces he and the team have created for the likes of Vogue, Selfridges, David La Chappelle and other special motion picture projects such a Charlie The Chocolate Factory and Batman. Rest In Peace, Chris.
