Trump was an early supporter of repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ – so what happened?

By Joshua Haigh

Trump might be set to gown down in history as the worst president of all time, but he wasn’t always as problematic as he is now.

Earlier this week, the former reality star announced on Twitter that trans men and women will now be banned from serving in the U.S. military, despite over 15,000 already enrolled.

The world reacted with collective disgust, which led to Trump tweeting that America worships “God” and “not the government”.

However, all the way back in 1999 and when ruining the United States was just a glint in Trump’s eye, the Apprentice boss actually spoke against the controversial Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell legislation, which banned gay men and women from serving in the army.

He said: “If a gay person can be a doctor or a lawyer or a teacher or take another position of responsibility, why can’t they serve this country in the military? ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ has clearly failed,”

“Gay people serve effectively in the military in a number of European countries,” he continued. “There is no reason why they can’t serve in the United States.”

So what happened to Trump in the past two decades that made him hate the LGBT+ community so much?
