A Russian politician involved in the the country’s anti-gay laws has responded to new measures by the British Foreign Office, which allows British same-sex couples to marry within the country.

The new measures mean that British citizens and their same-sex partners are now able to register their marriages in 23 countries where gay marriage remains illegal.

Lawmaker Vitaly Milonov told The St. Petersburg Times: “The British consulates can do whatever they want. They can marry monkeys and register perverts for all I care.”

Azerbaijan, Estonia, Latvia, China and Colombia are among the 23 countries where British citizens can now register same-sex marriages.

Milonov attracted attention last month when he urged Russia to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest, describing the competition as a “sodom show” and “Europe-wide gay parade”.

He objected to the involvement of eventual winner Conchita Wurst, saying her appearance was “blatant propaganda of homosexuality and spiritual decay”.
