LGBT athletes take home record number of medals at Rio 2016

Rio 2016 had already made history for boasting the highest number of openly gay athletes at an Olympics, but the cherry on top of an already stellar Games for diversity is the record number of medals those athletes took home.

According to Outsports, 25 out of the 53 openly LGBT athletes competing at Rio won a medal – a massive 47% – with ‘Team LGBT’ taking home an impressive 10 gold medals.

The gold medals were won by:

Nicola Adams (Great Britain, boxing – 51kg weight class)

Alexandra Lacrabère (France, handball)

Lisa Dahlkvist, Nilla Fisher, Hedvig Lindahl and Carolina Seger (Sweden, football)
