Cakes Da Killa on blazing a trail for black gay men and breaking “the glass ceiling”

By Josh Lee

Cakes Da Killa’s bold and brilliant lyrics put sexuality front and centre. In the still overwhelmingly straight world of rap, that’s not always going to lead to mass appeal. But when it comes to serving nothing but truth, Cakes is fearless: “It can definitely ruin a career but my whole thing is I don’t care. Everyone has their own path and journey, not everyone can live out loud like I do,” he tells us in the latest issue of Attitude.

Having come out “in the third grade,” Cakes – real name Rashard Bradshaw – knows that, whether he likes it or not, he’s now a role model – particularly for the still poorly represented black gay community. “I don’t try to battle with [the challenges of being black and gay] because I’m just living my life for me,” he explains. “But by me being comfortable with myself, it allows other people to be comfortable.

“There’s a glass-ceiling I’m breaking and I’m gonna enjoy that.”
