Zachary Quinto: ‘I’m not internally homophobic’

Zachary Quinto has defended himself against accusations he is “internally homophobic” following his recent comments about the LGBT community’s attitude toward HIV/AIDS.

Earlier this week, the actor condemned what he sees as the LGBT community’s “complacency” and “laziness” about HIV/AIDS, arguing that today’s generation are “much less fearful” of the disease, which is leading to a rise in infections. Find out more here.

In a self-penned piece for Huffington Post, the gay actor has stood by his comments, but admits that he “could have been more articulate” in the way he voiced them.

“I am assuredly not internally homophobic or poz-phobic or willfully ignorant regarding this issue,” the 37-year-old wrote. “I am a well-adjusted and well-educated gay man. Perhaps I could have been more articulate, but my comments were never meant to be incendiary or judgmental.”

He continued: “What troubles me – and what I was trying to speak to in my interview – is an attitude among (some of) the younger generation of gay men that we can let our guard down against this still very real threat to our collective well-being.”

“I have heard too many stories of young people taking PrEP as an insurance policy against their tendency toward unprotected non-monogamous sex. THAT is my only outrage,” he added.
