Watch LGBT choir take over Manchester tram in protest
By Sam Rigby
The Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus (MLGC) took over a city centre tram last night (November 17) in response to a recent homophobic attack.
Hundreds of people united in Piccadilly Gardens to perform Defying Gravity from Wicked, after two local gay men were assaulted for singing songs from the musical earlier this month – read more here.
Manchester Council supported the demonstration, supplying a stage and sound system for the choir to perform on in the city centre.
Councillor Kevin Peel told Manchester Evening News: “It was fantastic, there were about 300 people there and there was a really positive vibe, a kind of determination to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again and sending a message to people who have horrible views and attitudes that it isn’t okay.
“There were lots of people getting up showing their support and being defiant in the face of homophobia.”

The MLGC thanked those who attended for helping send a message to the homophobic attackers, and the population of Manchester. Read their message below:
Thank you so much to everyone who made tonight possible. We sent out a message loud and proud that you can be yourself in Manchester.
