Waitress tells gay couple: ‘We don’t like fags here’

A gay couple in Texas have revealed they were asked not to return to a restaurant because they are gay.

Colin Dewberry and his partner Kelly Williams were dining at Big Earl’s Restaurant in Pittsburg, Texas, earlier this week (May 27), when a waitress approached them as they were leaving and told them not to return.

“We’ve never had that kind of hate displayed to us before,” Dewberry told local news organisation KLTV.

“[She told us that] here at Big Earl’s we like for men to act like men and for ladies to act like ladies, so we want you to never return. It was just [said] so nonchalantly, almost like she was reading a piece of paper.”

The phrase used by the waitress – who is the daughter of the restaurant’s owner, Big Earl – is actually written on a sign that’s apparently been posted on the door of the established since it opened.

Responding to the couple’s comments, owner Big Earl claimed that Dewberry and Williams were actually asked to leave because they were touching each other inappropriately, and insisted that it had nothing to do with their sexual orientation.

“She’s a young lady, didn’t know what else to say, and they just kept on and she finally said, ‘we just don’t like fags’,” Earl explained.

Outlining the restaurant’s door policy, he explained: “You’re welcome to come and eat, but a man act like a man and a woman act like a woman. Dress appropriately and act appropriately when you’re in a public place. A man’s supposed to stand up and be a leader. He’s not supposed to be a woman. He’s not supposed to come in here in a dress.”

The restaurant has been inundated with negative reviews online since the story broke in the US.
