Each of the states involved each had their same-sex marriage bans upheld by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which is the only federal appellate court to have upheld gay marriage bans since the Supreme Court struck down part of America’s anti-gay marriage legislation in 2013.

Same-sex marriage is legal in 37 out of 50 states in the US, although there is currently on on-going battle raging in Alabama that has lead to a stay being placed on the ruling.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue its landmark ruling on same-sex marriage by June 2015.
