Two male students arrested in Morocco after video of them kissing goes viral

By Troy Nankervis

Police in Morocco have arrested two young men for kissing in public, after a video featuring the pair was published to social media. The two men were arrested on Friday 7 January in Aït Melloul, a neighbourhood in the Moroccan city of Inezgane, after a clip surfaced of them kissing in silhouette inside a high school classroom, reports Morocco World News. Local news outlet Le360 said the men were two friends both studying at university, one a hospitality student, and the other a law student who was working as a coordinator at the school where the vision was recorded. The men both remain in custody, with a verdict is expected sometime this week. If convicted, they could face up to three years imprisonment and a fine of 1,200 dirhams (£80, $120US). Last June, two Moroccan men in their twenties were convicted of an “affront to public decency” and an “unnatural act with a person of the same sex” after being arrested for allegedly holding each other at a historic site in Rabat. Same-sex sexual activity in Morocco is currently punishable by up to three years in jail.
