Three men arrested for ‘verbally assaulting’ gay couple on flight to Gran Canaria
The three British tourists mocked the couple during the flight and on an airport transport bus
Three British men were arrested by Spanish police after they reportedly “mocked” a gay couple over their sexuality.
The gay couple claimed that the three men “verbally assaulted” them earlier this month during a flight from Nottingham to Gran Canaria, a popular LGBT travel destination. The couple claimed they also faced abuse on an airport transport bus.
Gran Canaria, which is governed by Spain, outlaws hate crimes and speech based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
According to the Daily Mail, the couple filed a complaint with Gran Canaria police, who quickly identified the suspects from CCTV footage and ticket information.
Police have revealed that the three men, all aged between 25-28, were arrested on February 9 at a resort at Playa del Ingles.
They were questioned by a judge in Telde who charged them for “a suspected crime against the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.”
However, the three men, identified as RDJ, LW and KT, escaped charges due to a lack of witnesses.
No further information has been revealed.
