Thousands march against Religious Freedom Act in Indiana, Governor seeks LGBT protection clarification

By Ryan Love

Thousands of people have protested against the Indiana Governor’s decision to allow the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to come into effect in the state.

Last week, Republican Governor Mike Pence signed legislation which will allow business owners to discriminate against customers on religious grounds. The decision has been met with widespread criticism from public figures including Hillary Clinton and Miley Cyrus and global businesses.

Thousands marched in the state capital of Indianapolis yesterday, while several hundred joined a rally outside the Indiana Statehouse.

Governor Pence has defended the controversial bill, insisting: “This bill is not about discrimination. And if I thought it was about discrimination I would have vetoed it.”

He has also confirmed that he will support clarification that the act will not promote discrimination against the LGBT community. Similar clarifications are in effect in some of the 20 states which have enforced versions of the RFRA.

One business owner has spoken of his plans to refuse service to gay and lesbian customers – find out more here.
