Teenage girls arrested for ‘kissing’ in Morocco

By Fabio Crispim

Two teenage girls were arrested at their home in Morocco for kissing.

Reports state that the 16-year-old girl invited a homeless 17-year-old into her house in Daoudiate, Marrakesh on October 26.

The pair kissed but were unknowingly filmed by the 16-year-old’s cousin who then showed it to her mother.

The Moroccan Times states that the mother than alerted the police who arrested the girls and are currently in custody awaiting trial.

The mother is allegedly refusing to see her daughter.

Moroccan gay rights organisation Aswat Collective stated that lawyers refuse to defend detainees who have been charged with homosexuality.

Arrest for homosexuality is common in Morocco and there have been several arrests across the country.

Back in March, a mob caught a gay couple having sex and assaulted the two of them. The couple were arrested for homosexuality and a video of the attack went viral while another couple were jailed in June for having sex in their car.

Another couple were arrested when a photo of the pair kissing went viral over social media.

Human rights organisations are currently fighting to repeal the laws criminalising homosexuality and hope to free the people in jail.

Same-sex sexual activity in Morocco is currently punishable by up to three years in jail.
