Suicide and substance abuse linked to family rejection in transgender people, study finds

By Fabio Crispim

A new study has found that the risk of suicide attempts and substance abuse are increased for transgender and gender nonconforming people, according to Gay Star News.

The study analysed 6,456 transgender and gender nonconforming people from all over America.

The results of the study, which were released on Wednesday (May 25), state that 42.3% of them attempted suicide while 26.3% of them used drugs or alcohol in order “to cope with transgender-related discrimination”.

The researcher of the study, Sarit Golub from the Graduate Centre of City University of New York said, “People should understand that families matter.”

“When people are rejected by their loved ones, it can have serious emotional and social consequences.”

The study found that the odds of self-harm, substance abuse or negative impacts on mental health all grew with an increased level of family rejection.
