Straight men are having a lot of gay sex, new study finds

Despite having sex with another man, they still identify as straight

A new study has revealed that straight men are actually having a lot of gay sex.

An analysis of 24,000 undergraduate students has revealed that one in eight straight-identifying men who have had sex with other men don’t consider themselves gay or bisexual.

Conducted by Arielle Kuperberg and Alicia Walker, the study was published in Archives of Sexual Behaviour and titled Heterosexual College Students Who Hookup With Same-Sex Partners.

The study read: “Not everybody who has same-sex relationships is secretly gay. There was a big disconnect between what people said their sexual orientation was and what their actions were.”

The authors then explained there were two reasons a straight-identifying man would hook up with another man, the first being experimentation and the second “performative bisexuality”.

The study listed several characteristics of people who would have sexual relations with people of the same-sex but continue to identify as straight, which included “more Conservative attitudes”.

According to the study, some of the hookups were explained as ‘performative bisexuality'”, which happens when people enjoy sexual contact with people of the same-sex because of the attention it garners and the arousal it provokes in others.

The Metro reports that it’s more about “reaction than the actual act, which is why people who experiment with performative bisexuality don’t usually consider themselves to be genuinely gay or bi.”
