Sam Smith hits back at homophobic slurs on social media

Sam Smith has taken a stand against the vile homophobic slander prevalent across the internet, and the trolls who generate it.

The Daily Star reports the 23-year-old singer shared a screen grab to Instagram yesterday, which showed a fake Sam Smith account captioned with comments including “we hate faggot Sam Smith”, “there is a fag, his name is Sam”, and “he is gay, but that’s okay, we can all make fun of him”.

“This genuinely doesn’t offend me, coz I’m way too thick skinned when it comes to this kind of shit,” wrote the real Sam Smith.

“BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobia is still SO PRESENT in our society!!

The post, which has attracted almost 80,000 views, is filled with an outpouring of support for the Grammy award-winning artist.

“What a homophobic asshole! He should burn in hell. Don’t listen to him Sam, he is jealous of your fame, be you for you and we will support you,” writes sophiecandyfloss.

“Haters gonna hate but stars gonna glow,” said ilariacapitelli.

“Don’t worry about the haters. They are just ignorant bastards who have nothing better to do with their lives and who are jealous of you and how far you’ve come. Don’t let them get you down, you’re way better than them,” writes charliecat98.

Smith joins other artists including Mika using social media in their push for awareness and tolerance among the community.
